Vulvodynia, also known as vulvar dysesthesia, literally means pain in the vulva. It is characterized by itching, burning, stinging or stabbing in the area around the opening of the vagina. Pain can be spontaneous, varying   from constant to intermittent, or  occur only on provocation such as attempted vaginal penetration with sexual intercourse, a condition also known as vulvar vestibulitis or vestibulodynia. Symptoms of vulvodynia may range from mildly irritating to completely disabling. While a distinct sore, or area of redness may be visible, often the vagina shows no abnormalities or infections on gynecological evaluation. Unfortunately, many doctors are unaware that these conditions even exist, and may mistakenly suggest to patients that this is a psychological condition. It is common for women with vulvodynia to suffer for many years and see many doctors before being correctly diagnosed.

Until recently the treatments for these conditions were limited to avoidance of vulvar irritants, use of oral and topical medicines, vulvar injections, and surgery. The work of Howard I.Glazer Ph.D. has led to the development of the first non-invasive, non-drug treatment with scientifically demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of vulvodynia.

Dr. Glazer discovered that the muscles of the pelvic floor in vulvodynia patients were abnormal. This abnormality can be measured by highly sophisticated muscle measurement technology known as surface electromyography. Once the patients’ exact abnormality is known it can corrected by an individualized program of muscle rehabilitation and continued monitoring to assure that the correct changes occur in the muscle. Correcting the muscle abnormalities leads to pain relief.      Overall, women undergoing this treatment report an average reduction in pain of 80%. In addition, research reports that 50% of patients become completely pain free by the end of the treatment. Click here to view Dr. Glazer's peer reviewed medical journal publications.

A recent  Continuing Medical Education CD-ROM sponsored by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, entitled "Classical Approaches to Vulvar Disease" specifically recognizes the Glazer Protocol as an effective treatment for vulvodynia.     According to Libby Edwards M.D., Secretary General of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Diseases "We have come to rely on the Glazer Protocol as an integral part of treatment for our vulvodynia patients.
